Louise Abbéma (1858 [in
fact 1853]-1927) Original Oil painting (Allegory). Louise
Abbéma was born at Étampes, Seine-et-Oise, France
on the 30th October 1859 [in fact 1853]
and was a painter, engraver, sculptor, and woman of letters. She was
a pupil of Charles Chaplin 1825-1891, Jean-Jacques Henner 1829-1905
and Carlus-Duran 1837-1917 and whilst still very young, in 1876 had
a great success with her portrait of Sarah Bernhardt. She exhibited
regularly until 1926 at the Salon of French Artists. There she gained
an honorable mention of decorative panels in 1881, a bronze medal at
the Universal Exhibition in 1900 and the legion of Honor medal in 1906.
She left a body of work including many watercolors, pastels and engravings
plus numerous portraits, decorative panels and paintings of flowers.
She also worked with the magazines ’Gazette of Fine Arts’ and ’Art’ and
illustrated ’La Mer’ by René Maizeroy. Her most important portraits
were of Sarah Bernhardt, Ferdinand de Lesseps, Don Pedro - Emperor
of Brazil, Carlus-Duran , Henner and Charles Garnier. Her principal paintings
were ’The Seasons’, 1883, ’Morning in April’, ’in the Flowers’, ’Winter’,
’The Toilette of Truth’, ’Flora’ 1913. This oil painting is believed to
be a decorative panel. Some believe a possible stage panel. about 1881.
A few of Her paintings still offered at auction often at Christies or Sotheby’s
ranging in price between $10,000 and $25,000. This painting is very
dramatic and has a bold signiture. 60" x 42" on stretcher, unframed.
